Apprentice of the year - Landbased Industries

Paula Greenhalgh

Cater Veterinary Practice

Prior to embarking on her apprenticeship Paula had a wealth of experience within the animal care industry. She has worked at a practice for 17 years working as an assistant prior to starting the veterinary nursing course. Initially it was quite daunting for her to commence the course as Paula was concerned, she’d picked up bad habits over the years and might be too old to go back to studying!

Paula threw herself into the challenge of the apprenticeship and worked exceptionally hard throughout her qualification especially on bringing her use and knowledge of computers and technology in general up to date.

While undertaking her qualification Paula managed to juggle caring commitments and her work for the RSPCA in North Wales, she completed her apprenticeship in December 2020.

Apprentice of the year - Landbased Industries

Robin Owen

W W & D Owen

For someone of such a young age, Robin already had in-depth knowledge of farm work thanks to his involvement in running the family farm. Opting to complete the apprenticeship on his own farm Robin and his assessor were able to select units of study best suited to the family farm so Robin could get the full benefit of the apprenticeship programme.

As the apprenticeship progressed, Robin was able to take on more responsibility for the administrative side of the business such as recording births and registering movements. He’s even started rearing his own beef-cross calves taking personal responsibility for aspects of the venture.

Robin also does some relief work on a local dairy farm, he had a good attendance record and always showed up for online sessions held during the pandemic. His work referred to examples from his experience to demonstrate his understanding. During the practical observations, Robin proved himself to be exceedingly competent.

Apprentice of the year - Landbased Industries

Hari Roberts

Prior to his apprenticeship Hari had previously worked for a few local farms but came back to work on the home farm in order to do his apprenticeship. Hari has got good practical skills and he is starting to run the business with his mum.

Despite the fact that the farm has scaled back in recent years, Hari was able to make his mark on the business opting to bring in Rommey sheep, which have a high health flock status after extensive research of sheep breeds.

Hari has a hunger for learning and developing his skills. He frequently attends training sessions, online webinars and enjoys reading to further his knowledge. Hari applied to Farming Connect’s Agri Academy Business and Innovation programme and was one of only 13 people to be selected. Hari recently graduated from Agri Academy after attending residential and online sessions and receiving training, mentoring and support.
