Apprentice of the year - The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Award

Delyth Jones

Cyngor Gwynedd

Delyth worked at Cyngor Gwynedd on a temporary contract during her apprenticeship. Described as always very conscientious and hardworking, Delyth started with the Level 3 Diploma apprenticeship and after completion, continued on to the Level 4 Diploma. Her assignments were submitted bilingually with the majority being Welsh.

During lockdown and especially during the early days of the pandemic, Delyth really stood out and stepped up to the challenges. She was one of a small number of staff members who went into the council office, she kept things running by transferring calls to colleagues at home, processing final payments and invoices for suppliers, and critically sourcing PPE for Council key workers and helping to coordinate deliveries.

Throughout the whole process Delyth would always attend her online apprentice/assessor meetings with a smile and enthusiasm.

Upon completion of her course in February 2021 and in recognition of all her hard work and effort in the job role, Delyth was given a permanent contract by her employer. Her employer said that Delyth was a very worthy candidate.

Message from Delyth’s employer said:

“Very deserving”

Delyth has been a prominent member of the Team; during the lockdown period; she was the only one amongst us who would go into the office; and she managed to complete her own work as well as helping several individuals within several different Council services. She hasn’t complained about the extra work, although I am aware that the situation (covid) has caused her stress.

Apprentice of the year - The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Award

Sandra Jones

Bodacc Ltd

Sandra trained for her Apprenticeship in Business and Administration with Bodacc Ltd and is a fluent Welsh speaker and completed much of her apprenticeship through the medium of Welsh.

When she’s not studying Sandra loves to help the community and contributes through her membership Tremadog 200 a local group that arrange events and gatherings to raise funds for education and the local village - before Covid she arranged and coordinated social dining sessions for the elderly and isolated in the community.

When the pandemic hit, Sandra quickly turned her attention to making and distributing masks to local carers, as well as collecting prescriptions and doing food runs for her social dining members who she knew needed extra support.

She’s also a volunteer with CEFN (Supporting refugees). This involves collecting, sorting and packing clothes and other items to be sent to those in need, all across the UK and Lesvos.

Sandra loves everything that she does to help others, wants to teach her children that helping costs absolutely nothing and if we make even the smallest difference to a person's life then we have done our job!

Apprentice of the year - The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Award

Lowri Pointer

Meithrinfa Ffalabalam

Lowri is a deputy manager in a nursery and has completed a Level 5 Diploma in Care Management, Teaching and Child Development (Higher Practice) in December 2020.

Lowri completed her level 5 through a professional discussion as this was a more comfortable way for her to work.

Lowri has many years of experience of being a team leader and she is a manager in her post – this was a good experience and background to have for completing her apprenticeship. Despite this, she wasn’t as comfortable with the more traditional ways of learning and consequently, Lowri completed her qualification through professional discussion as this was the way she learnt and was best able to convey her information. These discussions were almost entirely in Welsh. In addition, she would complete all her research work for some of the units in Welsh and would discuss how her day-to-day work was relevant to the research she did as part of her apprenticeship.

Throughout her apprenticeship, Lowri’s diverse experience of leadership and management, including the work she’d done with additional special needs children, allowed her to reflect and act based on her experience in her current role in the nursery. A well as completing her own apprenticeship, Lowri is also very active in supporting staff who are also completing their own apprenticeship.

Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol

Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol is leading the development of Welsh-medium and bilingual education and training in the post-compulsory sector in Wales. The College achieves this by working in partnership with universities, further education institutions and apprenticeship providers to develop Welsh-medium and bilingual education.

The Welsh Government has set the ambitious goal of creating a million Welsh speakers by the year 2050. Post-compulsory education and training will play a key role in ensuring that this target is met.

Recently, the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol has extended its responsibilities to the post-16 sector, at the heart of that, is the Welsh-medium Further Education and Apprenticeship Action Plan. Our remit includes supporting Colleges to appoint bilingual staff to education in the priority areas of Health and Care, Childcare and Public Services. As part of the work we commission and develop resources, provide promotional grants for social events and activities as well as supporting a national ambassador scheme to encourage and influence learners to continue to study elements of their courses through the Welsh language.
